Brewers placed LHP Robert Gasser on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 2, with a left flexor strain.

It seems the second opinion didn’t come back quite as hoped. The Brewers have Aaron Ashby and Tobias Myers up to act as maybe their fourth and fifth starters for now. Hopefully, Jakob Junis and Joe Ross will return in a couple of weeks, and maybe there’s a chance Gasser will be back then, too.

Brewers optioned RHP Janson Junk to Triple-A Nashville.

Junk spent the last four days in the majors, but he didn’t get to pitch. He has a 9.00 ERA in five innings for the Brewers over the course of the season.

Brewers recalled RHP Tobias Myers from Triple-A Nashville.

Myers has a 5.40 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance for the Brewers this season. He’ll be available to go long in relief if Aaron Ashby struggles today. Depending on what happens there, he could stick around and make a start next week.

Brewers recalled LHP Aaron Ashby from Triple-A Nashville.

Ashby is coming off easily his best outing of the year, in which he pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out five against Memphis. That left him with a 6.80 ERA and a 43/38 K/BB in 42 2/3 innings for Nashville. He’ll make his second major league start of the year today against the Phillies. The first, in early April, saw him give up eight runs — four earned — in 3 2/3 innings against the Reds.

Alex Bregman was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup due to left hand soreness.

It turns out Bregman wasn’t ready to go after all. X-rays were negative on the hand after Bregman was hit by a pitch during Tuesday’s game. With Bregman out, the Astros have moved Mauricio Dubón from center to third and canceled Jake Meyers’ planned day off.

STL Shortstop #0

Masyn Winn is being rested for the second time in a week Wednesday against the Astros.

Unless there’s something going on here that the Cardinals aren’t disclosing, it’s weird that the team has decided the 22-year-old shortstop needs three days off out of the last seven (the team didn’t play last Thursday). Winn went 3-for-3 with a homer last night, pushing him up to .309/.359/.446, and his backup, Brandon Crawford, doesn’t seem to have much to offer at this point.

NYM Second Baseman #1

Jeff McNeil is sitting versus a left-hander for a third straight game on Wednesday.

McNeil would have played Tuesday had Trevor Williams not been scratched, but after he was replaced by a southpaw, McNeil again rode the pine. McNeil hasn’t actually been any worse against lefties (.246/.290/.323) than righties (.217/.299/.319) this year, but it probably is the case that Jose Iglesias is the better option versus southpaws.
J.T. Realmuto

PHI Catcher #10

J.T. Realmuto, who was pretty well beaten up in Tuesday’s game against the Brewers, is absent from Wednesday’s lineup.

It’s also a day game after a night game, but we imagine he still would have been in there today if he hadn’t taken quite a bit of damage Tuesday, particularly since the Phillies aren’t playing the next two days as they travel to London. Garrett Stubbs is catching today.

BAL Starting Pitcher

Cade Povich is being added to the Orioles taxi squad, according to MASN’s Roch Kubatko.

The Orioles were considering pushing back Kyle Bradish’s next start, so Povich might be in line to make his major league debut Thursday against the Blue Jays. One of this year’s emergent stars in the minors — he’s gone 5-1 with a 3.18 ERA and a 75/21 K/BB ratio in 56 2/3 innings for Triple-A Norfolk — he’s definitely worth a try in mixed leagues.

BOS Starting Pitcher #50

The Red Sox are looking at going with a bullpen game on Sunday and pushing Kutter Crawford’s next start back to Tuesday.

Bad news for those hoping Crawford would bounce back against the White Sox. He’ll instead face the Phillies if the Red Sox follow through on this, though at least he’d be doing so on six days’ rest instead of four. The Red Sox are off Monday, which makes the bullpen game a little more feasible.
