"March 2005 (International Terminal) - Incheon is definitely the most restful and stress-free airport I have ever visited. After getting bumped from an overbooked flight, Northwest gave me a free pass to their business lounge on the mezzanine deck while I could wait for a different flight home. It turns out the lounge posts a cruel "no sleeping rule." The sad part is that the terminal has more comfortable and welcoming couches to sleep on than the private airport lounge, right outside the door to the lounge on the mezzanine level!!!" "August 2004 - I travel from Narita (Japan) to Auckland (New Zealand) about twice a year, and the cheapest route is flying Korean Air through Incheon. On the leg back from Auckland, there is always a 4-5 hour delay between flights starting from about 5am.
This airport is clean, open, and designed with the comfort of passengers in mind. Since it is so large, you'll never have a problem finding open seats to lie down on. The main problem is due to the open airy design, it tends to be a little noisy at times. If you want to get some real sleep, bring earplugs. Security is present, but unintrusive, and I was never bothered by them.
The facilities are clean, and well maintained. Local electronics manufacturers provide large plasma 'display' TV's at most of the gates, and passengers are free to change the channels as they please.
There is an internet lounge there that charges for access, however, if you have a wireless capable laptop, there are several unencrypted networks available for use (probably belonging to the frequent flyer clubs). There is also no restrictions on using the terminal power points.
For an airport, it's a pretty good hotel as well! You certainly can't ague with the cost." Added 16 March 2005

"December 2004 - I had a 7-hr transit delay in Incheon. I stored my carry-ons in the free locker, which could be checked out by depositing the boarding pass for a locker key. I slept in the mezzanine level transit lounge, comfortable long couches. There is shower/massage facility there as well. Hot shower costs $6-7, also comes with a towel. I had 5-hr of uninterrupted sleeping, and after a hot shower and a meal of galbi I left Incheon airport without any incident. Clerks at the information booth, shower/massage place, and cashiers at the restaurant were friendly and helpful." Added December 27, 2004

"September 2004 - I had a few hours layover in Inchoen International Airport after a dreadful few hours sleep in JFK and little to no sleep in the flight, I was really tired. I was bringing my 9 month old son to grandpa and grandma's house in Bangkok so this was a harrowing trip. My son slept in JFK on my lap but the seats were horrible, on the plane he was a wreak so did not sleep a wink. When I arrived at Inchoen I found my departure gate and prayed he would sleep, fourtunely a troupe of dancers from the Cambodia Institute of Fine Arts showed up and were way early too, they were taking the same flight I was, and they went crazy over my son. They wanted to play with him so I could sleep - I must have looked like death! They looked very safe so I gratefully accepted and collapsed on the wonderful armrest free well padded seat/benches. A few wonderful hours later I woke, my son playing with my nose with a cute young cambodian dancer laughing at us. In the remaining two hours before the flight I chatted with her and her troupe. They marveled how I could manage with him alone and the cute one was interested the second I mentioned that his mom and I were not together anymore. On the flight she sat with me to play with him and me... We had a very very very good flight... Next trip I will be stopping by Phenom Penh (but NOT sleeping at the airport)..." "June 2003 - probably the best airport I have been to, very clean and modern. Impressed with its architecture and design. The only thing I didn't like about the airport was seeing a couple of mosquitoes late at night. I was surprised to see mosquitoes in a modern building like Incheon." Added 26 Aug 2004

"May 2004 - Would like to recommend not trying to book any of the sleeping rooms in the transit lounge. The sofas outside are better, there were 10 of us on our way to the Philippines and for once cash wasn't an issue, but they expected us to sleep 3 in a v small double bed!
Also everything shuts really early in the airport, we arrived at about 10pm to a deserted land, managed to beg a chef in the transit lounge to make us some food and give us a beer each but a little desolate." Added 08 Aug 04

"July 2002 - As a result of an immigration "misunderstanding" a friend and I were forced to stay at this airport for 24 hours. Although we were not detained we were free to roam the airport at our lesiure. 8-10 hours of this was spent asleep on the comfy chairs which provide great places to catch some Z's if needed. During the nite the airport is deserted and the wide open spaces on the top level provide a perfect area for a game of soccer. The security are friendly enough despite looking indimitating and didnt mind our soccer antics until I kicked our ball on top of a roof of a nearby shop - so if you can get up there, you'll score yourself a World Cup Korea souvenir ball. Definitely keep an eye out for the free internet cafe, you may have a to wait a bit but there are quite a few terminals, also head upstairs to the arcade area to kill some time playing video machines. The airport is immaculate and peaceful as an airport can be. Overall, i have been to a lot worse and am lucky I was stuck here." Added 09 Jul 04

Incheon - "February 2004 (International Terminal) - We missed our plane home and were stuck without much cash. Because our plane wasnt leaving agin for a couple of days, we wernt alowed through customs until the days of departure, so we had to spend a day in the check in part of the airport.
Heres a couple of hints to help you out:
1. Theres a supermarket down the road where you can get cheap sushi- its not walking distance though you will have to catch a bus, you can get tickets in the airport, ask at the information desk. tickets arnt to expensive and its worth it.
2. theres a free internet cafe on the floor below the big check in area on the mezanene floor
3. on that same floor-but not the mezanene- there is a suana/shower room, this is kinda hard to find but hey theres nothing else to do.
4. back up on the mezanene on the floor below the check in gates there are really comfy couches that you can move to make a nice bed, and its quiet n dark there. security didnt bother us.
6. theres another airport near the shopping centre its not flash but it does have a movie theatre , tickets are about 10,000 and usually are pretty good.
I hope that helps, some things will be a little hard to find, the airport is pretty deceptive, its got alot of nocks and crannies.. so good luck " Contributed by Krizchin (Added 10 Jun 04)
Incheon - "August 2003 - Incheon is a great airport with all the services one would need. Security is tight (heavily armed guards), but not intrusive. They leave you alone. Waiting areas are quiet until about 30 minutes before a flight so pick a spot where the next flight is schedules a long time away. There are 4 wide-screed HD tv's for every boarding gate so you can get all you need there. You can change the channels to get whatever info you need. CNN, TV5 (french international), BBC and local channels are available." Contributed by Lee Jeon-Su (Added 13 MAR 04)
Incheon - "September 2003 (International and Domestic) - Incheon is a brand new airport and one of the nicest I have seen in Asia, if not the nicest. There are sleeping rooms available after security, but cost about $45 USD for 6 hours. I didn't sleep in one, but I hear they are very nice and well worth it if you have a group and split the cost (don't mention this fact when checking in).
The best places to sleep are actually on the lowest level before you enter security. There are some very nice benches hidden away in some quiet corners down the long curved hall. There is a supermarket, gym, massage and pedicure salons (3 actually), bookstore, cafateria, and some other random shops down there. I recommend the lower level for long, quiet slumbers. If you want a hotel room, take the local bus (W600~) and get off as soon as you see a yeogwan (motel). The local bus should stop at the so-called "airport city" neighborhood about a mile away. They are cheaper than the airport ($15 for 6 hours). When you go back, just get on the same bus number in the return direction." Contributed by A.Mogensen (Added 01 JAN 04)
Incheon - "August 2003 (Domestic and International) - Incheon is perhaps the nicest airport in Asia, giving Hong Kong and Osaka Kansai a run for its money. Even in the bathrooms, which are immaculate, they have the cell phone number to the janitor who is responsible for cleaning them on an hourly basis- if you wish to complain in person. Ironically, though the complaint signs are in English and Korean, I doubt the poor man or woman would understand me. Nevertheless, the bathrooms are fit for a king. As for the rest of the airport, it is EXTREMELY clean and has places a plenty for napping, including some nice quiet, out of the way, nooks. A supermarket, a pay-per-use gym and sauna, banks, good restaurants, internet cafes, heck you can sleep here for a week and be quite comfortable. I napped in both the domestic and international terminal areas late one night. The Domestic wins only because it is very dark, very clean, has the same nice, flat, padded benches, and is very very empty. I only wonder why Seoul's domestic (soon to be international again) airport (Kimpo) has such crappy, stinky toilets." Contributed by Travel Bum (Added 01 JAN 04)
Incheon - "August 2001 (International) - well, got a 4 hour layover from SEA to HKG, got bored..so trot around the international terminal, staff was friendly. I guess you can sleep on the 'leather' airport chairs...a bit more noisy than I liked...found series of chairs without airrests.
Gift shops reasonable...food is okay...bathrooms not clean, but not filthy either.
If you have the money, you can hit the airport lounges or pay for hotel room for several hours ($6 USD/hr.) on the second level above the international terminal.
the airport is nice....but I personally dislike layovers, especially when you don't get much sleep (1 hr) for 24 hr flight journey." Contributed by dieGWdie (Added 01 JAN 04)
Incheon - "Incheon is quite fancy. You can add these two to your photo list. The benches are a good example of what travelers can expect to sleep on (I had a nice 6 hour slumber recently) both before and after security. Incheon is one of the most immaculate airports in Asia , with perhaps the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen (the opposite of sad Gimpo airport, the other one in Seoul [crappy old 'Gimp will soon be adding international flights again, unfortunately]). " Contributed by Andrew J. Morgensen (Added 01 JAN 04)
Incheon - "January 2002 (International Transit Lounge) - I spent 7-1/2 hours in the international transit lounge in the Incheon airport (Seoul). After a trans-Pacific flight, I imagined this layover would be hell but, in fact, it was not memorable at all because I slept quite peacefully the whole time. The couches were long enough to stretch out and no one disturbed me or my belongings. There were sleeping rooms available (for a price well out of my range) but I don't know why anyone would bother since the free couches were both comfortable and plentiful. I set my alarm clock and woke up refreshed for my flight to China. If you've got cash to burn (unlikely if you're on this website), you can even get a massage and other spa services while you wait for your flight." Contributed by Sharon Schierling (Added 12 OCT 03)
Incheon - "December 2002 - I had to longer stays (7 and 8 hours) in December 2003. I was really suprised. I've seen some airports but this was great. After a 11 hour flight you had enough possibilities to refresh yourself. The restrooms were very well cleaned. For not get bored there are a lot of shops, restaurants and nearly everything you need. There are special areas with comfortable couches where you can sleep. And if you have enough money you can relax with a massage or cosmetic ;o)
Fazit: No problem to stay there for some hours. " Contributed by Mandy (Added 04 Jul 03)
Incheon - "The Ichean airport in Seoul (Korea) was amazing. My friend and I were there the summer of 2001, and alternated sleeping for 12 hours, but really wouldn't have needed to. The airport has great soft couches and is highly patrolled by security, and we actually felt quite safe. A bonus: we had packaged noodles (as we had no Korean currency, on a layover from Thailand) and at McDonalds, instead of simply allowing us hot water to cook the noodles, prepared them for us, along with free colas and McDonald's toys. And plenty of smiles, which is definitely one of the best things to see on severe sleep deprivation." Contributed by ? (Added 02 Dec 02)
Incheon - "My husband and I traveled through Seoul's brand new Incheon International airport in October & November 2001. Maybe it's because it's still brand new, but this is the nicest airport I have ever been to. It's clean, fairly quiet and has lots of thoughtful amenities for travelers stuck on long layovers. There is a transit hotel available, but you'll do just as well sleeping in the terminal. All the seats are long rows of cushioned seats with no arms - perfect for stretching out for a nap or night's sleep. The airport also has two internet-connected computer stations available for free - you can find them on the first and second floor. The second floor is definitely where you want to go. You can access the internet, play video games in the arcade, take a shower, get a massage, or grab a nap in the couch-furnished lounge. On our return, we were there for 8 hours and weren't bothered at all by security. All in all, if you have to sleep at the airport, this is the one to be in." Contributed by Jeremy & Lisa Sutton
Incheon - "November 2001 - Very clean and well designed airport. On a 10-hour layover, found the transit lounge (upstairs) very comfortable for sleeping. Couches and chairs, quiet, subdued lighting, no hassles. Food was mediocre and gift shops -- ah, who cares. Pay showers but very nice facilities. Next time I'm there, I think I'll get a massage, too.
P.S. -- I was never outside of security so my answer on the survey doesn't come from experience." Contributed by ? (Added 04 JUL 03)
Incheon - "Mmm....a very new, nice airport. Customs was a sinche to get through and staffing was very courteous. Soft benches as well as some chairs provided ample napping time as I waited for my father to finish in the exceptionally clean bathroom." Contributed by Sarah Rehrer
Incheon - "I live in Seoul, and though I haven't ever slept in airports, from my experience, even an hour at an airport can be so tiring that I thought I might be of some help. I reckon you know by now that the Kimpo International Airport in Seoul has now moved to an island near Incheon, so it's called the Incheon International Airport. I've been there last month. The new airport is more roomy than Kimpo (which will be used as a terminal), and has less people as it is farther from Seoul. What I've seen on the news is that there are lots of mosquitoes there these days. So, the sleepers would need a repellent- which should be in drug stores there- to ensure a good night's sleep."
